Choosing a Stream After RBSE Class 10: Arts, Science or Commerce

Choosing a Stream After RBSE Class 10: Arts, Science or Commerce

Your Class 10 result opens the door to Class 11, where you choose a stream. It is an important decision, but not an irreversible one. Use these questions to choose with confidence.

Start with interest, then check the subjects

  • Science suits students who enjoy Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology and want routes such as engineering, medicine, research or technology.
  • Commerce suits students who like numbers in a business context: Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics lead to B.Com, CA, CS, banking and management.
  • Arts (Humanities) offers the widest choice: History, Political Science, Geography, languages, Psychology and more. It leads to law, civil services preparation, teaching, journalism, design and social sciences.

Use your Class 10 marks wisely

Look at your marks subject by subject rather than only the percentage. Strong marks in Mathematics and Science support the Science stream; strength in languages and Social Science suits Arts. Commerce works well for students comfortable with Mathematics who enjoy practical topics.

Questions to ask your school

  • Which subject combinations are available, and which optional subjects can I take with them?
  • Is Mathematics available as an optional subject in Commerce or Arts?
  • What are the admission criteria for each stream?

Keep options open

Many careers accept more than one stream. Management, law, design and many government exams are open to students from all three. Choose the stream in which you can study steadily for two years.
