Scrutiny or Supplementary Exam: Which One Do You Need After the RBSE Result?

Right after the result, two words cause the most confusion: scrutiny and supplementary. They solve different problems, and the deadlines are short, so it helps to know which one applies to you.

Scrutiny: when you think the checking went wrong

Scrutiny is the board’s re-checking process. It looks for totalling mistakes, answers left unmarked and errors in posting marks. It does not re-judge the quality of your answers. Apply if a subject’s marks are far below what you expected, or if you are just short of passing or an admission cut-off.

Applications are made online on the board’s website or through e-Mitra within a few days of the result. Full details: RBSE Revaluation (Scrutiny).

Supplementary: when you did not clear one or two subjects

If your result says “Supplementary”, you scored below 33% in one or two subjects. You can sit those subjects again a few weeks later and still pass in the same year. Full details: RBSE Supplementary Examination.

Quick decision table

Your situation What to do
Passed, but one subject looks wrong Apply for scrutiny
Supplementary in one or two subjects, and you suspect a checking error Apply for scrutiny and start preparing for the supplementary exam at the same time
Supplementary, and the marks look right Prepare for and apply to the supplementary exam
Failed in more than two subjects Talk to your school about reappearing in the next main exam

Do not wait for one before the other

Scrutiny results can arrive close to the supplementary exam. If you are in the supplementary category, keep studying while your scrutiny is processed.
